Thinking about fostering?
Fosters are essential to our rescue efforts across the US and Canada. It can be a very rewarding opportunity to know you’re part of a national network of rescuers dedicated to Maine Coons and MC mixes.

Did you know that most people think it’s hard to foster because they’re afraid of getting attached and eventually adopting, or of being upset when their foster goes to its new home? Well, it’s OK if you fall in love and adopt!! But, when you’ve cared for a foster cat and given it a second chance at life, it’s actually the best feeling when you pair them with their purr-fect forever home.
Our Fostering Expectations:
-
Veterinary care. We cover all approved vet care.
-
Spare room. You must have an extra room to allow the cat to decompress in isolation. Do not allow the cat to roam free. Rehoming can be scary and stressful, so a quiet, secure space is necessary for the cat to adjust comfortably and get used to its new surroundings. Cats come from varied situations and will therefore naturally have varied behaviors and needs. Isolating them helps them decompress and helps you assess their behavior.
-
Food, litter, and toys. We ask our fosters to pay for food, litter, and toys. The great news is our team will create an Amazon Wish List with food, toys, and other necessities. It is then shared with our whole community. It may not cover everything, but it will be a great start to get your foster kitty comfortable.
-
Socialization. You must nurture and work with your foster kitty. We depend on our fosters to get to know their foster cats. You will assess if they can be around dogs, other cats, or children. We depend on fosters to understand their personalities and behaviors so that we can place them in the best purr-manent home. Our MCRC team can offer advice on this.
-
Communication. Fosters are expected to be in regular communication with the MCRC foster team, so you will never be alone in the process. The team is always available to you. We expect lots of cute pics and anecdotes about your foster cat to share with our community. So, take pics!
Keep in mind that most of the kitties we rescue are adult Maine Coon mixes and are not necessarily pedigrees or kittens. Foster matches generally have to do with proximity to the cat in need.
